French doors are a beautiful addition to any home. However, they can pose some interesting situations if you want to add window coverings.

Before you choose your window coverings, you need to determine what you want the covering to do. Do you want it to add privacy, block out some of the light, or block all of the light? Do you want options on how much light is being blocked? How much space do you have to mount the blinds?

  1. If you’re looking for a window covering that allows many different options for light filtering, consider window blinds. Not only can you open and close them fully, you have the ability to tilt the blinds to let in the amount of light you want. Most French doors don’t give you much space to mount blinds, so you want to look for something that has a small mounting clearance, so look for ½ inch blinds (micro blinds) or 1 inch blinds. Visit our window blinds page to see the selection of blinds for French doors.
  2. You can also consider installing shades on your French doors. While these offer only open and shut options, you are able to choose how much light is let in when you buy the window shade, based on how transparent the fabric is. There is a huge variety of types window shades, fabrics, and styles available. You can definitely find your perfect French door window shade with Impact Blinds.
  3. If you’re not looking to cover your French doors but want to add some style, consider adding a valance or cornice. Adding either can bring your style to an otherwise plain door and bring it into the décor of the room. Shop our Valances and Cornices here.

Keep in mind, when you’re shopping for a covering for your French doors, they don’t need to match your window coverings exactly. If you have 2 inch wood blinds in the room, you can choose to have ½ inch or 1 inch blinds, window shades, or just a valance or cornice. If you have roman shades in all of your other windows, this can be a great place to bring in woven wood shades. Use your French door as an opportunity to bring in another material, pattern, or color and highlight the gorgeous addition you have to your home.
