Windows in great rooms can pose many challenges that other rooms don’t have. Since great rooms are so large and have so many different functions, it’s important to consider all the functions of the room and the style you want to set for your home. Your selection of window blinds can add to your room’s style, complementing the colors, furnishings, and accessories you already have.
Window Blinds
Window blinds are a durable, easy to maintain window covering. Window blinds are great for letting in varying amounts of natural light. Window blinds provide a great range of light filtering options, from fully open or closed to tilting the slats up to 180 degrees. You can get window blinds in a variety of materials from real wood to faux wood to high-gauge aluminum and they come in a range of colors and stains as well as different slat sizes.
Wood Blinds
Wood blinds are a classic choice for window coverings. While they’re often seen as too expensive, wood blinds from Impact Blinds are actually very affordable. Darker stains can provide a traditional or formal look, but when paired with contemporary furniture, can also be a fantastic addition to a contemporary room. Consider a lighter stain for a casual or country look. Painted wood blinds can provide a more casual, modern, or contemporary look.
Faux Wood Blinds
Faux wood blinds provide the same warm and classic look as wood window blinds, but that look can be achieved at a more affordable price. Just like with wood blinds, darker stains can look great in traditional, formal, and contemporary rooms. Lighter stains can fit in traditional, country, and craft-style rooms. Lighter stains and painted blinds can work well with casual, modern, or contemporary rooms.
Aluminum Blinds
Aluminum blinds are the classic selection for all rooms because they are incredibly affordable and come in so many different colors. Durable with clean lines, aluminum blinds can fit into any room style. Keep in mind, that aluminum blinds are durable and can last a long time – don’t choose a color you’re not willing to live with for 5 to 10 years.
Window Shades
Window shades are a great option for a window covering. They can be fully extended, partially extended, or fully closed. If you choose the top down / bottom up feature (which is our favorite), you can block off only a part of the window with the shade while still allowing light to come in from either side (top or bottom) of the shade. You also have the option to choose a more sheer (thinner) fabric. This will allow the sun to come in as a warm glow, which can provide a great ambiance.
Honeycomb / Cellular Shades
Honeycomb and cellular shades can provide a great atmosphere in any room. They softly filter the light coming in through the window and single cell shades as well as lighter double cell shades can provide a lovely “glow” to any room. Just like with aluminum blinds, be cautious of the color choice you make: you don’t want to choose a color that you won’t want to live with after a few years (consider living with a choice of aqua and peach from the ‘80s).
Roman Shades
Roman shades are a great alternative to draperies and can be more child-friendly than drapes since they can come in cordless, motorized, and continuous loop options. With a huge variety of fabrics, colors, patterns, and fold-styles, Roman shades can fit into any décor style, based on your choice of color, pattern, and fold-style.
Types of Windows
Great rooms can have many different types of windows for you to cover
so you will want to consider the function and placement of each window.
