Choosing window coverings for your bathroom is relatively easy. You really have the ability to choose any blind or shade that you want. However, when looking for window coverings in your bathroom, there are certain things you should keep in mind.
Privacy
First, how much privacy does your window blind or window shade need to offer? Consider what floor the bathroom is on and if there is easy access to look into the bathroom from the outside. If it’s on the ground floor or in an area that can be easily viewed from a passerby or neighbor, it’s unlikely that the window covering will be lifted. Window blinds allow you to slightly tilt the slats
open to let in some light while still maintaining privacy for darker
bathrooms.
When privacy is a concern, here are some things you can do about it:
If you like window blinds, consider choosing a routeless option. Routeless blinds don’t have holes for the strings: the strings go around the slats vs. through the slats. This makes it extremely difficult for someone to peek in through the holes. You can also consider adding cloth tapes to your blinds, which cover the holes for the strings. Keep in mind, it’s likely that your window blinds will rarely be lifted
or the slats opened.
If you prefer window shades, there are a huge number of options available to you. You should consider getting a more translucent (sheer) shade if you have a darker bathroom to let in more sunlight or a more opaque shade if your bathroom receives a lot of light. As with the window blinds, if there isn’t much privacy, these may not be opened, so you should make sure you select a shade that will still allow some natural light to shine through.
Natural Light
Bathrooms can be extremely dark, small rooms – windows typically help make them feel bigger and more airy because of the natural light that can come through. When choosing your window covering, be sure to take into account how much natural light you want to see in your bathroom with the covering closed.
- More light: if you would like to see more light, you should consider window blinds where the slats can be tilted or light filtering window shades. Both of these have the ability to let in a good amount of natural light. This will help your bathroom feel more light and airy… and less like a closed in box.
- Less light: if your bathroom is part of your master bedroom or gets a ton of sunlight, you may want to consider room darkening or blackout window blinds or shades. These will block out most or all of the light, depending on what you choose and can be a lifesaver for bathrooms that are connected to bedrooms or bathrooms that too much afternoon or morning sun. These can also really help cut down the energy bill because they reduce the amount of heat that comes in with the light.
Durability
Let’s face it: it’s a bathroom. You want to choose a window covering
that is durable and easy to maintain. The easiest and most durable
solution you can find for bathroom windows is faux wood blinds. These
are extremely moisture resistant, easy to maintain, and very durable.
Next on the list are aluminum blinds. While they are also extremely
durable and moisture resistant, they are slightly more difficult to maintain that
faux wood blinds. Roller shades are great because they can be wiped
down easily.

Some coverings you may want to think twice about before purchasing for
your bathroom are wood blinds can warp if they’re in an environment
that has too much heat or moisture (they’re wood!). Thicker window
shades may take longer to dry if they’re in damp environments so be
sure to go for a thinner material.
