Contemporary Window Treatments

For a contemporary look, you want your window treatment to be extremely simple and to work with your current color scheme.

Blinds
If you want to use window blinds in your room choose a larger slat size: 2 inches or more. We suggest selecting either a painted white blind or a very dark stain. Consider making a huge impact with a Mahogany or Black walnut stain. Another idea is to select an outside mount and extend the blinds 3 - 4 inches past the window. This can create a very contemporary and unique look in your home.

You should also consider getting a larger slat (2 inches or more) in aluminum blinds. These can provide a unique look that is durable and comes in more colors than traditional wood or faux wood blinds.

To achieve a look like this, we suggest our Premium 2 inch Basswood Stained wood blinds in Dark Teak, Cordovan, or Rosewood. Or select our Premium 2 1/2 inch Kiri Tree Stained wood blinds in Cherry, Old Teak, or Dark Mahogany. For a more affordable solution, Textured & Stained Faux Wood blinds in Cherry, Dark Teak, or Rosewood provide a similar look. Any one of these will look great with an inside mount and the standard valance.
For this look, you'll want to choose an outside mount and extend the size of the blinds at least 1 foot above and below the window and 4 - 6 inches on each side. We suggest our Premium 2 inch Basswood Stained wood blinds, our Premium 2 1/2 inch Kiri Tree Stained wood blinds, or for a more affordable version, our Textured & Stained Faux Wood blinds in one of the darker stains such as Dark Teak, Rosewood, Cherry, or Dark Mahogany.

Shades
Cellular shades have become more popular in contemporary room designs. With the huge array of colors and their sleek design, it’s easy to find the perfect cellular shade for your room. Plus, with the top down/bottom up control, you can create a unique statement with your windows using them as a design element. When purchasing your shades, stay with classic colors: peach and turquoise shades sounded great in the 80’s and look very dated now.

Roman shades can look great in a contemporary room as well. Stick with a basic fold – we recommend our flat-fold roman shades. Just as we recommended with window shades, stick with classic colors. You can also choose a simple pattern: think straight lines or exaggerated patterns. Both of these can add a lot of style to your room.
